Knee Arthroscopy

Knee Arthroscopy

Knee joint is formed by femur (thigh bone), tibia (leg bone) and patella (knee cap).

The knee is a specialised hinge joint formed by flat surfaces and it is stabilised by multiple ligaments. The ligaments surround the knee and provide stability by limiting abnormal movements. Ligaments are torn in sports, two wheeler accidents and falls.

Arthroscopy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure.

It is a keyhole surgery of the joint through very small incisions 4 millimetre telescope is introduced into the joint. And using precision instruments many procedures can be carried out. Arthroscopy has revolutionised the joint surgery and it’s a boon to treat many joint problems.

The arthroscopy and sports medicine service of SIMS-AJRI provides keyhole and minimally invasive solutions for complex problems of knee, shoulder and other joints. Of Particular interest is the field of joint preservation surgery which tries to save the life of the joints and postpone the knee replacement surgery.

Knee arthroscopy:

  • Ligament reconstruction
    • Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL)
    • Posterior cruciate ligament (PCL)
    • Collateral ligament reconstruction
    • Patellar dislocations (MPFL)
  • Join preserving procedure
    • Meniscal repair
    • Meniscal Root repair
    • Cartilage repair procedures
      • Micro fracture
      • BMAC cartilage repair
      • ACI – Autologous chondrocyte implantation

The choice of arthroscopic surgery for a particular patient depends on physical demands of the patients, the location of the tear, the type of the tear, associated intra-articular pathology, the presence or absence of ligamentous instability, and the patient’s ability to remain on crutches and activity restrictions for a significant period of time. The age of the patient becomes significant because as the patient gets older, the likelihood of a degenerative tear increases and the probability of a repairable tear significantly decreases.
